Back to School....Giveaway

Update: WINNERS!! Rachel, Vanessa, Caitty and Bridget! Send mailing addresses to Corrie.

Our big yellow friend is back! Unfortunately, he comes way too early. School started this week. Summer is gone. I loved not having a schedule.

On the bright side, as promised earlier in the year, today I'm giving away my priceless Back to School editions of the Martha Stewart Kids magazine. The MS Kids magazine is no longer published! I've been hoarding six of them, two of them have to go to me & Des, so the other four are for you! It's the Summer/Fall 2001 magazine. It's all about School Lunches, Weather Watching, Organizing Baby Clothes, Puddles, Making Tacos, Ice Pops, Owls, Tree-house bedrooms, Sprinkler Parties and more. Making tacos -- see, I told you this was the perfect magazine for me. That I can do.

There will be four random winners chosen later tonight. Tell me something about school clothes. I remember wearing smocks and having 2" embroidered ribbon on the bottom of my pant legs. Did Mom sew that on or did we buy it that way? It made your pants last longer. Mom knew all of this stuff WAY before Martha. She was a Renaissance woman.

  1. I just remember wearing alot of clothing fabric patterns that are strangly coming back in style. People are flocking to the fabric stores to stock up. I personally think it's kinda awesome.
Ahhhh memories.. Thanks for the total flashback.:)

  2. My favourite memory of September was the smell of the classroom on the first day of school. I can still remember the smell of new crayons, paper and glue...and seeing everything in it's place ready for all the new students...guess that's why I still love stationery and this time of year...for me it's more like the start of a new year than in January.

  3. I remember wearing matching tights and blouses with a non-matching skirt. And shifts! They looked like overgrown mens dress shirts. With tights...everything was with tights.... dare not show your legs.

  5. I'm sure everyone does this, but I remember after getting a few new outfits for school, the BEST one would be for the first day, and my mom would take pictures of us at the front door before leaving for school (looking at those pictures now, those clothes aren't so cute)

  6. I remember that the fisrt day of school the clothes felt stiff. I also remember doing a really big shopping trip with Mom before the fist day of school. I remember going to "The Bon". LOL. Oh good old days!!!!! My husband just went back to school (PhD program after being out for over 7 years) and my 3 year old wants to go to school so bad that she crys every moring when Daddy leaves for school. Poor Kid!!!

  7. My Mom made a smoke for me out of fabric that had Holly Hobby on it. I think I wore it to shreds. She always put a 3 inch hem in everthing so she could let it out as we grew. Then she would sew ric rac or ribbon over the hem line.

  8. back to school--combined torture and joy, as i recall. best thing when i was in grade school was that mom would always make sure i had two new dresses from her sewing machine when we hit the school again. (yes, i am old. i am from the end of the "white glove" generation. but the advantage was that our teachers could still dispense hugs when we needed them--and the principal had the option of spanking!)

please add me to the list!

  9. Mom always made me tops and bought me jeans. She was (is) a really good seamstress so that was okay with me. I'd show her things I liked in catalogs and stores and then she could pretty much duplicate them, even with hand embroidery. The worst thing about the first day of school, as I remember, was my feet hurting from new shoes that hadn't been broken in yet! Ugh! What made it worse is that I always walked to school so my feet would be killing me on the walk home after school! Seeing and talking with all your friends from the year before was the best part for me. I like to talk. Sometimes too much. According to some people.

  10. I never got to go "back to school" shopping until I was in college! (Cue the violins please) I wore a uniform for 12 long years. I actually think that was much easier now that Hailey is in school. Now I have the joy of trying to find clothes that are lightweight but also wash well, since my little tomboy brings home every bit of dirt from the playground. :)

I remember taking the first day of school pictures by the door too! I now make my oldest do it too, I love a tradition.

  12. I remembering wear plaid shorts and matching solid colored tees. I also had to have a matching hairbow and socks. I was big into matching! I had about 5 of these outfits that I wore all the time, well until it got cooler and I had to wear pants :(

  13. Back to school for me too. I teach 2nd grade and have one more week. My mom used to give my sister and me each $2.00. We would walk to Newberry's and buy 4 patterns each for new school clothes. I love the magazine and have several old copies filed with my teaching units. My new classroom valences have owls on them. This issue would be perfect! Thanks for the giveway!

  14. I loved back to school clothes shopping. Of course, all the fashions were for cooler weather - sweaters, etc., and it was always so blazin' hot when school started. It was so hard to wait to wear that new sweater! :)

Bridget says: On the first day of school I remember getting a pink plaid outfit with a skinny necktie & wearing my hair in a side ponytail. I also had legwarmers I looked hot.

  21. Back to school clothes weren't really a big deal when I was groing up. I went to a catholic school till high school and wore uniforms. The only days we could plan for was picture day. The only thing I remember was the sparkly barrettes I wore the first day 5th grade. They were those GOODY brand with Holographic prisms on it. I guess I have always liked the bling.

  24. Mom made a few dresses for me when I was a kid (and always made my halloween costumes from scratch!), mostly they were two-toned, with a bib vest over the top, so sweet! I remember those dresses with joy. I was that kid that thought having something Mom made was the coolest.

  25. I wore a uniform my whole school life, 12 years. I do remember, that my Mom made all my dresses, so when we had non-uniform day ( in my day it was to send them to the cleaners) I would have something new. I was from the hot pants era! I had bright pink, and velvet powder blue! I loved those and would love to enter your giveaway, thanks, Jane
