Laura & Mary

Little House on Prairie moments at our house.
I've been drowning in calico.

The girls were at camp for a week, then Bella had a leadership conference and now a pioneer trek to Martin's Cove in Wyoming. They will pull handcarts as the pioneers did 150+ years ago.

I'm really glad they get to go. We've known this was coming for about a year, but it did kind of sneak up on us.

For extra projects in our 4H group, the girls made aprons and bonnets, but there were, skirts, buttonholes, snaps, bloomers & hems to finish up. And of course matching headbands. I'm sure that was a must for the pioneers.

They've been learning the Virginia Reel & other square dancing.

The 4H group also made drawstring totes. The pioneers called one of these a "possibilities bag". A little trickier than it looked, but they work!

There are 40 youth going; they are split into families that each have a ma & pa (and there is a doctor going. Lizzie has back issues, so we're hoping for the best.) Am I worried? Yeah.

At the last minute,

Bella decided to make bandannas for her family.

We've had lots of sewing going on.

They are ready to go.

Last night, they left in a big purple bus.

They drove all night & should start on a historical,

meaningful and humbling experience today.

Okay, I really miss them already.

  1. A few months ago, my local group of crafters had a debate on what is calico. For me its a soft cotton fabric for quilting. When I saw your post, I think it could be the design of the fabric. Can you provide some info, if you know?

  4. That is awesome! I read another blog where the girl makes the same trek with her family each year - they always have a blast. What a cool experience it will be for them!

Now I want a cupcake after a certain picture in that series.... :)

  12. Delightful! I re-read all the Little House books last and year and had a blast! I am so happy to hear your kids are in 4-H. Here in Illinois, we are having budget issues and have almost lost 4-H a couple of times. I am a leader and this year we were so close to having to cancel our summer shows because they did not release our funding until VERY late in the process! Luckily, we are safe for another year.

  13. Aw such cute pictures. Our kids go in exactly 1 month. I have to get going. They are going somewhere else though, not Martin's Cove. Somewhere muddier, dirtier and harder probably. Ick. I'm not much of a pioneer woman.

  14. You have some beautiful young girls here. And the knowledge they are about to embrace. I think this is just wonderful and what better way to learn than to do. They will be home in no time, so enjoy your free time!

  17. Wow, what a great experience for the girls! I just finished making 8 pioneer skirts for the girls in our area who are doing a pioneer trek later this week. I hope I never have to make another pioneer skirt again! Okay, maybe by the time my daughter is old enough to do something like this I'll be up to the task again. I hope your girls have a good time.

  19. Your girls just keep getting more beautiful everytime I see them. They look adorable in their trek clothing. How did it go? I don't know if they are back yet or not cause I didn't look at the date of your post. Hope they have the best time and MAMA is okay while they are gone.
