  1. How about yo-yos? I'm working with a yo-yo project whenever I travel.

    ReplyDelete
  2. I was going to say yo-yos too lol. I am so new to sewing it is hard to say. maybe some hand embroidery on a project or something.

    ReplyDelete
  3. i'm addicted to making little sock toys- stuffed owls especially!! love the fabric

  4. How about single blocks to quilt? You can piece single blocks and then handquilt them (allready sandwiched) and put them all back together by machine later. Because you are working on a small area, you can really do a lot of spectacular quilting!

Also working on a small quilt or mugrug, cushion cover etc works great. Think applique. Tia (campfollowerbags) did her DQS7 on the plane and appliqued and embroidered lots of details in trees and on grass etc etc. Applique like Cathy (Cabbage Quilts) does is also very suitable. You prepare the applique beforehand (tutorials on her blog) and then you do the positioining and needleturn on the plane.

It all needs a little preparation before but all small and not only doable but very satisfactory as you see the results grow! (and I suppose everything needs prep... even hexies!)

Good luck and have a great trip you two!

  5. I don't have any good ideas for something to do on the go.... most of my IGP's (instant gratification projects) require a table and more access to a more stable setting.... I say bring NOTHING and just enjoy the journey you're going on. :o)

    ReplyDelete
  6. My suggestion is to take a notebook and instead of doing a project - make it a point to take in the sights, sounds, smells and scenes around you. Draw pictures of what you see, write lists of what phrases you hear, describe with great detail the smells in the air....etc. This will ignite new creativity and returning to your projects and crafts after the trip will be VERY rewarding!

    ReplyDelete
  7. hmm...well you could take a quilt-as-you-go project with you if you liked hand quilting because you would be able to hand quilt the squares while you were travelling. Or maybe a really cute stitchy could be a good idea!

    ReplyDelete
  8. What about small Dresden plates for a little table topper. Or if you do crocheting, what about Granny squares in yummy colors? Enjoy you trip!

    ReplyDelete
  9. a notebook, or sketch book is a good idea, or a good book!! if you are hexed out, how bout a book? i would love to win a charm pack of pure. thanks

  11. Happy Bday Lizzie! I usually quilt bigger stuff, so it's hard to take that anywhere. I usually take my knitting! Please, oh please pick me because I LOVE this fabric!

    ReplyDelete
  12. well, I usually crochet on the go... but if you want sewing- what about felt stuff? it couls be felt food, finger puppets or anything you like.
    enjoy your travels!

    ReplyDelete
  13. I would make yo- yo's. Perfect little project!
    Thanks for the chance!

    ReplyDelete
  14. I was thinking yo-yo's also! Is redwork or bluework
embroidery too much to take along? Happy Birthday to Lizze!

  15. you can cut flower petals and hand sew them on the trip ,I have done those by hand and it is easy peasy ,I made my own pattern ,a circle and then equely drew the lines across on a piece of constrution paper depending on how many petals you want your folower to have ,when done I cut one petal out and used it as a pattern and started cutting of each fabric how many flowers I wanted and then sewed them together ,I used various scraps that I had all mixed up striped, flowery dots etc.

  16. I find on the go projects difficult. I am new to the quilting world and seem to require a dedicated space to spread out in. I carry cross stitch projects probably because I have more experience (am more comfortable) with those.

    The fabrics are beautiful.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I make cathedral windows on the road. There are 2 tutorials on my blog. You make the base at home and on the road you stitch the windows.Thank you for the chance to win this lovely fabric.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Happy Birthday Lizzie!
on the go...I made fabric covered hair bands and magnets on the go...easy peasy lemon squeezy but the first thing that actually came to mind was hand stitching....on a baby quilt, or a doll quilt or a mug rug...you get my drift?
Pure *might* change my mind about the blue/brown combo of colors! thanks for a chance.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Although it has already been said, my on the go project is yo yo's. I have them made up already and on the go I join them. But when I started the project I was making them on the go.

Blue and brown combos are great for guys, I "need" to win this!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Our choices of things to do "on the go" are limited with quilting, aren't they? Unless you're a hand-quilter and can hand-quilt individual blocks. Maybe you could toss some scraps in a container along with some quilting books and come up with some ideas for another quilt top. You could look through the scraps you carried along and take your books and come up with fabrics and a design. Other than that, your choices are so limited - hexies, yo-yos, individual hand-quilted blocks, that's about it. dmj53(at)hotmail(dot)com

  21. My current go-project is clamshells. Assembly can get a bit unwieldy if you do rows, but I see folks doing small sets and assembling them later. Lots of basting prep! If you're interested in yarn work, Tunisian crochet makes a great carry-along project too; the basic stitch is easy and it's only one needle!

    ReplyDelete
  22. hand embroidery is a perfect on the go project! fill a small zipper bag with your supplies and you're off!

    thx for a great giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  23. How about a small apple core project such as a table runner. thanks for the giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I like to take my binding projects with me places.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I don't really have any good projects for on the go. How about you bring a quilting magazine and get inspired to make your next project?

    ReplyDelete
  26. My last trip I took hexies and I knit my own dishcloths. It's the only thing I know how to knit and I really needed some new ones. They are quick and easy!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I do hexies or cross-stitch, embroidery, knitting, crocheting. All those things work well in a car or waiting at someone's practice.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Stitchery/embroidery is my go-to, on-the-go project. It's so easy to do on the road and the time flies.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think yo-yos would make a good on the go project. And I just love the nastage of a yo-yo quilt on a bed

    ReplyDelete
  30. Maybe a new bag for autum like a birdie sling?
I would be happy to sew a notebook cover with these wonderful fabrics.
    Kind regards from germany
    Gaby

    ReplyDelete
  31. How about little embroideries that can be incorporated into a bigger quilt when you're back home? I'd love to win some of that Pure fabric...oh how I love it! Thanks for the chance.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I would suggest knitting because it's easier and so relaxing.
Thanks for the chance. Those fabrics are gorgeous!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I crochet pretty borders on fleece for baby blankets (using a skip stitch blade to make the holes). Thanks for the chance!

  35. Hi. A great on the go project for me is making bottlecap mini pincushions! So cute, great gifts, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Crocheting! Don't need many supplies!

    ReplyDelete
  37. How about taking some graph paper and colored pencils? Once you get started - you can doodle for a long time!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Knitting or a quilt book to look over while you're away. Or a small lap quilt ready for binding.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I tend to do cross stitching or crocheting when I travel, anything else I need more space for. Thanks for the giveaway and enjoy your trip!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I saw a cute Yo-yo Frankenstein and Witch at the quilt shop the other day, as well as wool felt candle mats for Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
At AllPeopleQuilt.com you can do a search for "on the go". There were pincushions, table mats, wall hangings, all kinds of fun stuff. I loved their little sewing caddy. It's going to make a great gift for my 11 year old.

    I love this fabric!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I love this blue and brown color combo! I can't sew in the car w/out getting car sick but I can knit. Knitting is very portable!

    ReplyDelete
  42. How about some embroidery? The biggest thing (in size) you'll need to pack is the hoop! Also crochet, that's very portable too! Thanks for the giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I usually keep a few small projects specifically for travelling. Crochet (I'm making snowflakes to give to teachers this year), cross-stitch (I've got a "tapestry" I've been working on for 10 years LOL), embroidery (iron-transferred print onto towels). And I always have my idea sketchbook with me with my travel pallette of watercolor paints so that I can jot down new ideas and color schemes. I like the idea of crocheting small whimsy items to applique later onto a quilt -- there's tons of instructions of how to crochet butterflies, flowers, bugs, etc out of the colored cotton crochet thread (or even out of embroidery floss). Can you imagine a darling quilt made with Michael Miller Flower Fairies with some little crochet butterflies and flowers sporadically appliqued?

Oooo! Perfect idea! Pick out some charm squares (or fussy cut some yourself), and outline embroider a part of the print on it to make it "pop".

Or... Make some embroidered quilt labels. I saw a cute idea at stitchlings.blogspot.com

Oh I love the pure colors! Those blue and brown colors are perfect for a snuggly lovey blankey for my sweet baby boy.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Stitching binding is my favorite on-the-go project!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I ADORE Pure!!! This is my all time fav line.

For an on the go I'm sure half the people have mentioned is hexies! Easy, portable and make some very cool projects.
Prepping applique, especially if you glue baste, is also something I try and keep handy. Or binding is easy in the car. Some embroidery also, though I find it makes me car sick to do while in the..wait for it...car! lol

    ReplyDelete
  46. funny because I first thought of a hexagon project! what about crochet or knitting? great stop and start again project.
    annemolino at hotmail dot com

    ReplyDelete
  47. I love love love Pure! I'm actually thinking of using some for a baby blanket for a cousin! I think an appliqued baby blanket using pure would be a fantastic on the go project!

  48. First, the most important thing – Happy Birthday To Lizzie!! 15 is an awesome age.
For an on the go project suggest you hand sew a small block with set in seams – an 8 point star or LeMoyne star. It will be portable, challenging, and take time. Use Jinny Beyer’s method of hand-sewing. Or, you could even use one of Jinny’s free block designs from her web site. (2) Or, use the bird on a branch free design from the blog of Jenny Elefantz to make a pretty stitchery. (3) Or, take a sketch book and dream up patterns and colors to use in a quilt. Whew! Now I’m tired. mlwright29 (at) hotmail (dot) com

    ReplyDelete
  49. I love Pure fabric. My idea and I didn't steal it from you is hexagons. I'm simply hooked on them lately. Happy Birthday Lizzie.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I love to take embroidery projects with me when I'm on the go. You put a couple of needles, some thread (better if the project doesn't have lots and lots of colors...), scissors, thimble and fabric, and off I go! I usually go for projects that don't require me to take my embroidery hoop either (the cross stitching stays at home :-)

I loooooove pure. I need that charm pack!! :-D

  51. I can't do projects "on the go" because I get motion sick pretty easily. You could maybe bring a little sketch book or a tiny tape recorder to jot down ideas that you have while away from your sewing stuff...

    ReplyDelete
  52. Hand applique or embroidery...sorry not too original.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I usually do larger projects, so I don't have a suggestion. However, on my trips, I usually take quilting books or magazines that I haven't gotten a chance to look at for inspiration.

    ReplyDelete
  54. on the go projects are not my specialty. however, if you have your camera with you taking pictures of random things you see. will always inspire new projects. so keep your eye out and your mind open and you will find something to do when you get home.

    ReplyDelete
  55. When I'm traveling (which, unfortunately has not been often lately) I tend to take my notebook to write down or sketch ideas. I sometimes also take small projects that I can work on which I keep in separte little bags, like embroidery or cutting out applique parts. One of my new endeavors (not related to quilting) is needle felting, so I've been working on small pictures. It's easy to take a small piece of foam, the needles, felt & roving on the go to make pretty little pictures!

    ReplyDelete
  56. A great on the go project would be this Rag Rug tutorial over at Moda Bake Shop. I started one a year ago when i went on vacation...it gave me something to do on the 10 hours drive, since I wasn't allowed to be a driver. There's just a little bit of prepping to do, but it will be worth it once the project is done.

    ReplyDelete
  57. i would probbably make many dresdens before the trip and applique them on the go. Or maybe some drunkens blocks.
    Love the pure line
    thanks

    ReplyDelete
  58. Happy birthday, Lizzie!

How about a Dresdan Plate? I love doing those by hand.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I was thinking yo-yo's also, love them! Then there always embroidery, applique, cross-stitching or favorite thing to do when traveling is to search out new quilt shops and new fabric!

    ReplyDelete
  60. If the quilt isn't too big I take it with me on the go when I'm finishing the binding. Happy borthday to Lizzie, and have a great trip!

    ReplyDelete
  61. I like to take my applique projects to go. It's amazing how much can be accomplished.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Happy birthday Lizzie!! English paper piecing can't be beat when it comes to portability.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Counted cross-stitch used to be my take along project, but I just started a Joseph's Coat quilt that has lots of hand applique, so that's what I take everywhere with me, now. But anything with some hand applique or embroidery is very portable! Happy Birthday Lizzie!

    Tracy

    ReplyDelete
  64. Start an embroidery or mini quilt by hand. I like to take some cut solid material along with me that I can hand stitch my labels for quilts.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Stitcheries, cross-stitch, yo-yos ... I'm working on hand piecing a one-block charm quilt by hand - apple cores. They have curved seams, so they are a good project to do by hand. I'm also doing a series of small cross-stitches that will be part of a quilt some day. Thank you for the giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  70. Sometimes I prepare fussy-cut fabric for on the go. I outline the shape and bring small scissors and just cut. Thanks for the fabric give-away. :)

    ReplyDelete
  71. Hmm, my current on-the-go project is hexies, but since those are out, I say go for a good book!

    ReplyDelete
  72. I love making yoyo's on the go... but I took a needle punch project with me the last time I traveled (far)... also there are wool pennies as an option.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  77. On The go I usually crochet or cross stitch.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Love the soft muted tones of this fabric. My idea for on the go....I'd say a mini or doll sized quilt - all done by hand. Nothing too big to have to travel around with.

    ReplyDelete

  86. Thank you for the order. I love the charm pack! I usually like to take on trips a cross stitch. I have a few that have been in the works a few years. Or I like to take stitcheries that I am making for Christmas gifts. I hope that helps.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I can't do portable on the go projects for a moving car....I can't even read in a car. But if you are thinking for sitting without movement I can suggest little hand piecing ornaments or even small embroidery hoop stitchery...perhaps one color so you don't have to tote alot of everything you know?

    ReplyDelete
  88. I always have a quilt that needs the binding finished! I constantly leave one in my car for me to add just a few stitches while I am waiting for my kids at piano, violin, soccer, swimming, ect. I love to keep busy and make the most of my time.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Happy Birthday to your beautiful DD! :-) I like to take along easy embroidery along the lines of African Folkloric, which I just discovered but love! or a small wall hanging that I've decided to hand quilt... portable and easy to do. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  90. OMGosh--I am starting a quilt for my best friend's daughter using these exact colors--I would love to have them! I have a few pieces already but would enjoy more interesting choices! Thanks for the giveaway and Happy Birthday to Lizzie--my son will be 16 in two months!

    ReplyDelete
  91. Take along projects for me are usually stitcheries or wool applique. Hope you both have safe travels.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I like to hand applique shirts and handsew binding on the go.

    ReplyDelete
  97. How about mini sachets with the brown and blue fabric and do some doodle stitch embroidery on top.

  102. My on-the-go project is embroidery. My favorite embroidery squares were when I made some pictures of our favorite vacations, which happens to be the beach. I found really cute pictures from coloring books- sand dollars, sandals, dolphins, etc. It's now a quilt with a lot of meaning behind it.

    ReplyDelete

  114. You guys are so amazing with your giveaways! I'm so lucky to have won last time. Yoyos are a fantastic on-the-go project -- I'm working on a yoyo quilt and I'm starting to see the end of the yoyos in sight. Then the real work starts!

    ReplyDelete
  115. Well, one thing I thought of is your zippered pouches that you had a tutorial on a while back. I love those, and I've made about 24 of them! I get all the machine sewing done, then take them with me and do the hand stitching in the car. I'm giving them as Christmas gifts to everybody and their dogs. (Thanks for the tutorial!!!)Or another car project I like is crocheting kitchen "scrubbies" out of nylon net. They are so handy and easy peasy.

  121. I always pack something to do on the go and never ever do it! I finally learned to just let my mind go while on the road. Don't bring anything. That's my suggestion. Your creative side might think up something clever while it's not busy.

  124. I recently made a huge huge huge half-square triangle quilt. I sewed the squares diagonally and made a big stack. Then, on a road trip I cut them all in half. By the time I arrived at my destination, I was ready to iron, square up, and sew.

I also make fabric flowers and hand-sewn felt projects in the car.

  125. When I'm on the go, I like to bring my yarn and crochet hook. It's so easy to pick up and put down. And if you loose a stitch, it's never as big a deal as if you were knitting.
Thank you for the Pure giveaway! The colours are luscious!!!!

  128. PURE totally rocks. Oh how I would love to win a charm pack of that delightful little party of fabric! I was going to say hexies, but since that is ruled out, maybe some embroidery or cross stitching? I dunno....
