Grumpy's a Softie

This past Christmas, I made a few dolls.
Harry, my 4-year old, started getting a little attached to them.
They were flying around the room & watching TV with him.
So I thought, oh, I could make a boy doll.
Right?
A boy doll with very long legs.

But before I got too far into the design stage.
I saw Grumpy at Walmart.
Then I thought I should make my own version of Grumpy.
I was planning which colors of felt & fleece I would need...
Thank goodness, that thought didn't last long. Now, not knowing if he really wanted "a new friend",
I bought it more for me than him.
I don't know about your Christmas night bedtime,
but our's went like this...

Harry: "I don't want that angry man!!"

"He's yelling at me!!!"
What??

Harry thought Grumpy's nose was his mouth.
~

After a month, I sat down with Harry and
suggested he stitch a smile on Grumpy, underneath his beard.
"See, he's really smiling at you."
That did the trick.
They are partners now.

My daughter knew I liked Grumpy so much,
she got me my own little Alice on a keychain!
These would be so fun to make.

What do you think?
Does it look like a mouth?

  1. I am with Harry on this one, I thought it looked like he was shouting. Much nicer with the smile.

  2. I thought that was a mouth too! A little scarey. The added smile is a clever touch.

  3. Yeah Harry is right, the two dots look like nostrils, eyes closed and shouting, hmm... but the smile sure worked. I love Alice, so cute!

  12. I totally thought that was the mouth too - made him look like an angry yelling man. Great idea with the hidden smile... scares everyone else away but smiles at your son secretly :)
