Rescue 911 ~ A Giveaway Winners Chosen

I'm a helper. There's nothing I love more
than a friend in sewing distress.
"I'll be right over."
Kathy: Needed a little assistance making a Vintage Baby Quilt.
"No problem, I'll be right over"

I just hustled my little caboose to her house. We got to the point where we needed some pins.
Sure, she has pins
They were something out of a 1970's
dress shirt from JC Penny's.
Rusty and as sharp as my fingernails
and left holes as big as my thumb in the fabric.
Hmmm....need to do a little measuring here.
Sure, she has a ruler.
It looked like it had been sitting in a
kindergartners desk with melted crayons
and a Garfield sticker over the 3" marking.
Let's just do a little trimming of that.
Sure, she has scissors.
She was just using them to scrape gum out of the carpet.
And rest assured, we made a few bloopers and yep, we need to unpick those.
Because I'm all about fixing our mistakes.
She handed me a fork. Is is lunchtime?
No, this is what I use to unpick the hems in my sons church pants.
THAT was the last straw.
So in order to keep with my 'helper bee-ness" I made up a little rescue sewing kit for her.
First, my very most favorite pins!
They glide in and out like silk!
And they're blue and yellow!! How pretty!!
Dritz Quilting
100 Crystal Glasshead Pins
Size 1 7/8" .5mm

Nice SHARP scissors.
Kind of girly and petite, so a husband
or son won't be tempted to use it for skinning a deer.
Gotta have the measuring tape to line up
all those mitered borders!

A needle threader and a seam ripper.
I've forgotten that most of the civilized world knows nothing about a seam ripper. My mother never owned one. I was raised using a razor blade and I have the scars to prove it. I guess a fork doesn't sound too bad. Do you own a seam ripper?? I mean they cost a whopping $1.69 at Joann's. Use your 40% off coupon and you are set back $1.01.

And now for the MAIN EVENT~ No decent do-gooder would DREAM of giving a sewing kit to someone without the essential pin cushion. And a homemade one would be even better!

Whew! Did you get all that?
And I haven't even gotten to my thesis statement yet!
I LOVE THIS PIN CUSHION!
I've made them by the dozens. It's a darling pattern from my buddy Kimmie Poo Diehl. Kim Diehl to you, have a little respect. She has generously donated a couple of patterns for you, our loyal Thursday Giveaway Readers. I'm going to spend 3 more minutes and put together a cute little pin cushion kit just for you!!
Kit equals=you do the work. :) I provide the material and pattern. I'm just trying to help your self-esteem grow. Hard work....didn't your mother tell you that??
Giveaway is for a pin cushion KIT. NOT a sewing kit. There will be no scissors, seam ripper or measuring tape. You will receive the pattern with cute little fabric to make your own pin cushions by the dozens.
Kimmie has a knack for writing patterns like nobody's business. She is clear, concise and thorough. Unlike, myself....see the dictionary under confusing, convoluted and caustic.

If you're still here.....leave a comment and tell me about your sewing kit. Make it up if you have to! Do YOU own a seam ripper??
THIS IS CUTENESS, people!!!

2 lucky girls..........Random drawing later tonight. You know the drill.

p.s Because I live so darn beautifully, I've also made one of those cute little baskets to put all of the goodies in. Pictures to come later.........

  1. Well, my sewing kit is shambolic. Everything tangled together in a mass of pins needles and threads. Oh and it's all thrown together in an old see-through plastic Clinique makeup bag (promo from a department store). I must tip it all out and start again. But I agree, a seam ripper is a must. xxx

  4. What a cute pincushion. Would love to have it! My kit is an open basket I have owned for over 25 years. I made a lining with little pockets that are way too deep and am always losing bits and pieces in them. But I like it being open as I can throw anything and everything into it. PS My pincushion is on its last legs!!

    Cheers

  7. those blue & yellow ones are my fav pins. yeah i know. just the kit. i prefer to have about 6 of everything just scattered all over the place so i can magically find whatever i need whereever i am. but when i need a seam ripper i just can't seem to find it. so much that i always have to visit my sister when i have a "gotta-have-a-seam-ripper-project". she has about 3. but i think if she looks she might only find 1 because i think i have borrowed 2 of them & not brought them back.

  11. What a cute pincushion :-)

My sewing kit also have a pincushion - a red and green one with a button in the middle, several scissors ( a girl can never have to many scissors at hand :-)), good needles and a tape measure in both inch and centimetres - and off course seam rippers - yes plural. I have all these goodies in a small sewing bag I made this spring.

  12. My sewing kit is a small basket that sits on an end table next to where I sit on the couch. There is a pincushion (very old, needs replacing!), several small pairs of scissors, two thimbles, two pencils, a quarter inch marker, white and grey thread and lots of different packs of needles.
It's messy but it works for me.

  14. You mean some people have a PLACE for sewing items? What a great idea...hmmm...my pins are in the sewing room, scissors? last time I saw them they were in the kitchen covered in tape....tape measure..might be in my car...needles (not the one stuck in my big toe)..I have one needle left.
Gee, I think I need a sewing kit..

  15. Yes I own a seam ripper - several infact! And I didn't grow up saying seam ripper - to me it will always be a "quick-unpick"!! Funny stuff:) The pincushion is adorable - crossing my fingers!

  16. Well, I have a fairly decent pair of scissors, a couple of tape measures, and I actually have three seam rippers. But, I can only ever find one at a time. :) I had the exact same problem with the pins. I was afraid I was going to get tetanus or something. My sewing mentor came to the rescue, of course, with a box of pins!
Now, that pincushion! I have a thing for pincushions anyways, but that pincushion is adorable!!!

  17. I do have all the basic sewing supplies I just never can seem to find them. I toss everything in a basket so I am usually digging around blindly when I need the seam ripper or measuring tape. And then of course are the times things just plain aren't there because one of my little ones has decided to run off with it. The measuring tape is a big hit with my 2 year old. Something about the way it clicks when you pull the tape out amazes her, haha.

p.s. The pincushion is too cute!

  18. Hi!! I am in need of a really great honest to goodness pincushion like this lovely one!! I think if you have a fantastic looking pincushion it really helps to get your creative juices flowing and if for some reason you your creativity is not flowing very well the seam ripper will come to your rescue!! Happy Day to All!

  20. I do have a seam ripper, just used it yesterday, I believe I have 2! But I do not have a CUTE pin cushion, my pins I put in an old RX bottle so my 2 year old can't get them but I would love a pin cushion pattern, he knows the word NO very well (the 2 year old trying to get my pins that is)

  21. My sewing kit definitely includes a seam ripper plus little scissors and a magnet to pick up all of my stray pins!

  22. I'm loaded with supplies from my mom and grandma's extras, but my husband's little sisters (in high school) are starting to sew and this would be great for them. thanks!

  23. I absolutely love the pincushion...I 've been wanting to make one...it would be so great to win a kit! I do own nice scissors and a seam ripper...but I've never used a needle threader!

  24. I would be lost without my seam ripper. Ok if you must know I have 3 seam rippers. One I keep right next to my machine, one next to my iron and then i carry one around with me that is really sharp so I won't rip my fabric. I have the sharp flat flower head pins. and rulers in every room on every table. I do the the pin cushion:)(what a great friend you are to go help your friend in distress) Hope I win!!!

  25. Okay, actually, I have a great sewing kit/box. It's a tackle box type (remember the Caboodles?) I've had it for about 20 years. And I just cleaned it out/organized it about a month ago! In it is 6 pairs of scissors, marking impliments, pins, needles, a few seam rippers, and various other sewing related items. HOWEVER, I do not have a pin cushion! And this ones a cutie... Have a great day girls!

  26. I still have my seam ripper from Home Ec in 8th grade. It still has the little, tiny piece of paper with my name written on it covered in tape.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Oh oh oh pick me pick me. I feel like Horshack on Welcome Back Kotter (you are probably too young to remember that show). Anyway I have great tools. My mom (who was a cheapskate) taught me never to skim on sewing tools. I think I've got 4 seam rippers. But that pin cushion is just the right size/idea for something I want to do. So yes ! I want it.

  28. I actually have two sewing kits. One is a fabric-lined basket that sits on my sewing machine table upstairs in my sewing room. (I hesitate to call it a "studio" cause that makes me sound like a professional, and well, I aint.) This one holds my seam gauges, point turner, shears and thread clippers, machine needles, extra bobbins, tape measure, sewing needles, tracing wheel, and magnetic pin holder along with extra pins. My other sewing kit is a hat box that I keep downstairs in the family room for hand sewing in front of the tv. It holds embroidery scissors, needles, floss, black and white thread, a couple of thimbles and my reading glasses--but no pincushion!!! I really need a pincushion to go in the hat box downstairs. The hat box pins are all just kind of scattered on the bottom of the box. Help me overcome this atrocity and make me the winner of the pincushion!!!! Plus, it looks like it would make great Christmas gifts, after I first make my own, of course. dlord(at)pinehurstpropertiesllp(dot)com.

  29. Do I own A seam ripper? If you asked my husband that he would say that I had a million. In reality I have about five or six and I purchase more when they are on sale because I keep misplacing them. I don't know if I rip out seams with forks or razor blades.

    ReplyDelete
  30. A RAZOR !!! My heck. Personally I sorta know what a seam ripper is. But my husband knows it well. I shall give him the title of Official Seam Reaper Outer. Truly. I'll have to capture it on film. (mmm. Do we say that anymore, because really we don't capture on film too much anymore. So perhaps I should say; I'll have to capture it on SD (card)). Awesome Post! Something I'd read in a magazine. Very cute Pincushion too. Enter me... ;o} ooxx~jod

  31. I've used a tackle box as a sewing kit. Works pretty well I must say. My DH suggested I do this. Right now it's pretty tangled up and needs to be organized. Yes, I definitely have a seam ripper. Couldn't work without it. I love the pin cushion, and just maybe this will be my lucky day.

  32. I love that pincushion! Before I had even finished the post I was wondering how I could make one. My sewing basket has been attacked by my pet badgers....errrr I mean KIDDOS. They have snipped it with my stolen scissors, pushed needles ALL the way into it, and made bird's nest out of thread. It looks rough but there is a seam ripper somewhere in there of which I live in fear that the 3 year old will poke his sister's eyes out with. Love your blog and sense of humor! Look forward to reading it.

    Happy Days,

  33. I forgot to mention in my post earlier that I do have a sewing kit. I still use the same blue plastic sewing box I've had since a teenager. My collection spans over many years of scissors, pins, threads, darning egg, tracing wheel, thimbles etc. My most cherished item is the darning egg which I remember my mother using to darn my fathers socks. Her beautiful nimble fingers moving effortlessly and lovingly fixing those holes in the socks. There is a comfort in sewing along with a feeling of accomlishment that is timeless. Ciao!

  36. I own many seam rippers. One in my sewing machine caddy, one in my hand-sewing supply bag, one for traveling (no laughing.....), and a couple of others that I've picked up along the way. I'm sure you can imagine that I am always astounded when someone at a sewing class or a quilt class asks to borrow a seam ripper. What? But then again, I am the gal who always carries a tape measure in her purse. Maybe I'm the one with the problem......

  37. My sewing kit is actually a sewing dresser in the guest room. It is full of old spaghetti jars with ribbons and buttons in them. A plastic case with thread. A travel sewing kit from a hotel is the only thing that has needles in it. My pins are kept in the same plastic container I bought them at WalMart a while back. So a pincushion, especially a cute one like that, would be a MAJOR upgrade.

  38. What an adorable pincushion!! A seam ripper is a big must in my household. I think that aside from my fabric, thread and tomato full of pins the seam ripper is the most valuable piece of crafting equipment I have!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I DO own a seam ripper! In fact this is probably my 3rd one. I guess I wear 'em out. Nothing like a sharp seam ripper when you need it. I also use mine to hold things as they go under the presser foot when I dont' want to sacrifice my fingers. I have my 'original' tape measure from home-ec (do they still offer that?) although I do have a newer/longer one as well.
CUTE pincushion!! I use two of those magnetic ones. They aren't so cute. What used to be my sewing kit is now spread around my sewing room. Kit in a room, or is it room in a kit?

  41. My Mom gave me a sewing kit 10 years ago when I bought my first sewing machine - cute little box with a tray that pops out and it came with all the essentials - including a seam ripper, which I've had to update with a new one because it was getting a little dull.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Would love a chance at the pincushion. My sewing kit is stored in a rubbermaid sandwich box. With scissors, needle, thread, and yes a seam ripper. I do almost as much reverse sewing as I do regular sewing.

  43. Just love the pincushion! So very cute! My sewing kit also contains a pencil, sm notebook and a calculator. I am displaying signs of half-heimers (that is the early stages of alls-heimers - ha ha) disease and need to write everything down. Works really well with my old brain. Thanks for the wonderful pictures.

  44. First of all, I need/want a pincushion! I've never heard of using a fork or a razor blade as a seam ripper. My mom always used a seam ripper, so that's what I use. In fact, I think I have two seam rippers. In my sewing kit I have needles, thread, scissors, a tape measure and pins. Although, I never seem to have enough pins.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Thankfully I do own a seam ripper, although one time I couldn't find and used a straight pin instead. That was torture.
I really love the pincushion and am using a tomato kind that everyone has right now...I need to upgrade!! Thanks!!
